Partnership for Diversity (PfD 2007), the conference of European Bureau for Lesser-Used Languages, will this year explore issues in minority language broadcasting. The conference (26th-29th September) will gather a host of experts in the field: broadcast practitioners, academics, policy makers and representatives of language communities from across the EU, to Vigo di Fassa, Trentino, north Italy, set in the heart of the Ladin-speaking region.
The conference will focus on several key topics, raising questions on:
- How have national and regional governments responded in the provision of broadcast media in RML languages?
- Have RML communities succeeded in creating services with a broad appeal, or have our programmes been sent to the margins of schedules as competition in the market place has intensified?
- Have national services shown creativity and flexibility in allowing the development of innovative programming or dedicated RML channels?
- Or is it the case that nothing much has changed, and that the very competition that is supposed to drive the market has narrowed options? It is ironic that the coming of digital television brings a new problem; a prospective loss of service in their mother tongues to cross-border communities.
- For PFD 2007 RML language communities will be able to ask the question; have we been competitive in the broadcast media marketplace? What have been our successes and failures? Has there been any evidence of useful cross-border or intercultural cooperation?
The conference is being hosted by Trentino region.
