HUMAN RIGHTS EDIUCATION - UNFINISHED PROJECT

What

As we have already informed in the very beginning of our project, the main idea concerning this Training Course was to put the idea of Human Right for Human Rights Education on the map and push the idea with different methods, thus to achieve the launch of a fruitful debate in the society.
We had a very interesting composition of participants - 9 international and 15 local. In the selection we took into account the experience of the participants in the field of Human Rights Education. As we were aiming to make an event of different scope it was important that participants knew acknowledged methods of COMPASS so that we can spoke over it in depth.
We started on 26th of November with a dinner of introduction and on the next day we started with the introduction of the aims and objectives as well encouraging participants for their reflection on the expectation from the event. This was also accompanied with elements from games of getting to know each other. The central point of the day however was a guided “tour” through Compass. We spoke generally about Compass and its role in HRE.
It should be noted that this TC was implemented within the framework of the “All Different-All Equal” European Youth Campaign on Human Rights, Diversity and Participation; we made a presentation on the Campaign. We should note that this Campaign is very popular in Azerbaijan and this year there were numbers of events of various scopes dedicated to it. After the coffee break there were practical exercises on different methods of Human Rights Education. The session following the lunch concentrated on the different spheres of human rights and explained within the international human rights regime. After some theoretical debates in small groups, concrete “suggestions” were presented to participants in plenary.
Following day morning session started with the interactive discussion with NCC of Azerbaijan on the Campaign. It is worth to mention that we managed to start morning sessions with the Campaign thematic. Representative from NCC informed about the advance of the Campaign in Azerbaijan so far and plans for the next year.
The rest of the day we were mainly dealing with international mechanisms in the field of human rights. Trainers were successfully managing to unite theoretical background information on concrete details with the practical know-how of the non-formal education methods. It was a method leading from theory to concrete actions in the education process.
Another point in our lobby for the Campaign we divided participants into small groups where they discussed each element of the Campaign in depth.
It should be noted that, in this Training Course we tried a bit to come over shortcomings of the process of the Human Rights Education. We believe that in particular in transition countries the problems are different from those of in the rest of Europe. Here applying just methods elaborated by specialists of the Compass without taking into account cultural realities of the country/region will not only cause inconvenience, but at the same time can undermine the whole process. This issue was also in our focus along with cultural relativism vs. human rights.
Shortly one can say above given on the training course in Azerbaijan. A detailed report is being prepared by our team and will be sent in due time to European Youth Foundation.
