Introduction:
In 1807 The Slave Trade Act becomes law, abolishing slavery in the Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. 2007 marks its two hundreds anniversary. The European Youth Campaign "All different - All equal" launched by the Council of Europe and its Member States in 1995 was a milestone in reinforcing the fight against racism, anti-semitism, xenophobia and intolerance. September 2007 will draw the conclusion of the new campaign on the themes of Diversity, Human Rights and Participation which started from June 2006.
On these two special occasions, Charnwood Racial Equality Council (CREC), with the support of Minorities of Europe is planning to host an international training course on the use of intercultural learning in youth work in European Union and its neighbouring countries and regions. Our focus is to explore the potentials of non-formal education (such as tools like sports, music or arts) in human rights education, active citizenship, racial harmony and social cohesion in the local community.
Participants will benefit from the rich experiences – 30 years of local and regional work of CREC presentations from a panel of experts in the UK, share knowledge and practices from their own countries. They will also have the chance to get to know the newly established Commission for Equality and Human Rights (CEHR).
The format of this training course will be a combination of formal and practical activities, including presentations, workshops / debates, multicultural nights, games, diversity movie café and cultural visits to local areas in Charnwood, Leicestershire and England.
Objectives:
- To train 24 youth workers, volunteers and community leaders in ICL – both theoretically and practically
- to underline the importance of ICL in youth work
- to promote ICL as a concept and a practical tool in youth work
- to foster future international youth projects with an ICL dimension
- to link ICL to other areas of youth work
- to exchange good practice in ICL and youth work
- to promote the YOUTH Programme as a tool for ICL
