FYEG Action Week against Xenophobia: 2nd-8th of October 2006
Within the “Unity in Diversity” Campaign, the Federation of Young European Greens is organising an Action Week against xenophobia.
In the first week of October, FYEG will encourage its member organisations (spread across Western and eastern europe) to look for xenophobic practices within their communities and to take a stand against these, by organising a local activity that suggests their unwillingness to accept discriminatory practices. Xenophobia should never be tolerated, regardless of the form it appears in and of the place it appears in – this is the message that we want to convey through the Action Week.
This common European action week is in fact a good illustration of the campaign’s slogan, Unity in Diversity. That is to say, the issues that Europeans are confronted with when it comes to xenophobia are very distinct throughout the continent. There are various manifestations of xenophobia and these manifestations take different forms within local communities. However, their destructive effects is what we have in common all over Europe. By establishing this Action Week, FYEG wants the fight against xenophobia to become a further and more visible common feature. Although our problems are diverse, our solutions, if united, can overcome them.
FYEG strongly encourages its member organisations and all other civil society movements interested in working on the topic to join this Action Week. Any symbolic activity taken between the 2nd and the 8th of October will connect your organisation to a network of youth NGOs that are willing to take a stand against discrimination based on xenophobia. Together we can make our beliefs visible!
If you want to join the Action Week, by organising a small activity in your local city, but don't know where to start, check out our website: www.unityindiversity.org You will find a detailed description of the Action Week, plus lots of ideas for actions.
